As part of the Women Leader’s Forum on The Future Women Want at Rio+20 in Brazil, Mary Robinson moderated a lively panel discussion on Normative Frameworks and the Integration of the Three Pillars of Sustainable Development.
The energetic discussion was attended by more than 380 people in Rio Centro and reached 1.4 million people online. Panellists and members of the audience reflected on progress made as well as gaps and challenges in the implementation of key normative frameworks for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Panellists at the event were Ms. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, Mrs. Vanda Pignato, First Lady and Presidential Secretary of Social Inclusion of the Republic of El Salvador, Ms. Anita Nayar, Executive Committee, DAWN, and Ms. Heidi Hautala, Minister for International Development of the Republic of Finland.
Issues discussed included women’s leadership and participation, women’s land rights, customary law, sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, the impact of climate change, the important role of access to sustainable energy for all, the need for strong social movements, concerns over regressing on existing normative frameworks and the need for Rio+20 to deliver key decisions.
In her summary, Mary Robinson said she was energised by what she had heard during the discussion. She supported the proposal to highlight 3-4 key issues that everybody in the women’s movement could unite behind, so that a strategic and prioritised stance could be mobilised to deliver concrete results in the coming years.
The Women Leader’s Forum, a day-long event, was convened by Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Under Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women. The messages and recommendations from the forum will feed into the Women Leaders’ Summit on Thursday 21 June 2012.
