On 27 September 2012, on the margins of the 67th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement launched its Progress Report, 2011 – 2012.

The report presents a detailed snapshot of the progress and results towards scaling up nutrition in SUN countries for the period 2011-2012 and the broad evolution of the Movement.

In April of this year, Mary Robinson, President of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice was appointed by the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to the lead group of the SUN movement.

In the report, Mrs Robinson states that ‘women’s capacity to address health and nutrition risks resulting from climate change must be enhanced.’

Through her role on the lead group Mrs Robinson has been working to ensure that gender equality and women’s empowerment inform all aspects of the SUN movement’s work: ‘My vision on the way forward is for a mindset breakthrough that recognises the gender dimension and women’s empowerment as core elements in addressing under-nutrition. If we do not empower women to take control over their lives and develop self-reliance, we will continue to ignore and undervalue the contribution of half the population.’
