With women under-represented in the board room and at the negotiating table, Ms Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC said “it is astonishing that we are 50% of the population”.

Speaking at a Climate Change TV televised panel on Gender and Climate Change on 20 June 2012, Ms Figueres said her wish is that “the world will soon work itself out of this conversation”, when low carbon living becomes the norm and there is parity on decision-making by women and men.

Mary Robinson, President of the Foundation, said she shared the sense of it being possible to have women genuinely empowered and part of the decision making process. She spoke of her vision of the future being a world where global justice and equity underpin a people-centred, developmental approach to advancing climate justice and more effectively addressing the impacts of climate change.

Yolanda Kakabadse, President of WWF, spoke about the importance of investing in young girls. “We would change the world if we could strengthen education”, she said.
