…work with me to develop a strong climate justice narrative, grounded in human rights, to ensure that the commitments made in Rio this week translate into actions which benefit and protect the poorest and most vulnerable people.

That was the call made by Mary Robinson at ‘Sustainable Development in an Unequal World’, a high level Rio+20 side event co-organised by the Club de Madrid and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and co-sponsored by the Republica de Costa Rica and the International Trade Union Confederation.

Mrs Robinson was one of a number of Club de Madrid members, including Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Anthony Lake, Executive Director of UNICEF, who participated in the event on Wednesday, 20 June 2012 at RioCentro.

The event focussed on the linkage between economic growth and stability, on the one hand, and social inclusion and cohesion on the other. Mrs Robinson welcomed the concept of shared societies, adopted by the Club de Madrid as a means of informing our approach to equitable sustainable development.

She said that the concept of a shared society – a society based on equity, where each and every person, feels at home, feels that they belong and that they can play a full part in that society, and at the same time, fulfill themselves – compliments a climate justice approach which is people centred and strives for greater social equity.
