With a population of 1.6 million, climate change is already affecting weather in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Rainy seasons are unpredictable and bring sustained heavy rain, causing severe flooding in the cities’ streets. To exacerbate the crisis, many of the poor communities live in overcrowded conditions - often three or four families stay together in one house.

During recurrent food crises that the people of Niger have faced in the past 30 years, women have been relied on as the pillars of food security and nutrition. But, with many unable to access land for farming, women are themselves becoming more vulnerable to malnutrition. 85 percent of the country’s rural households rely on agriculture for food and income. But without land, women struggle to provide food for their children, meaning that 10-15% of Maradi’s children suffer from acute malnutrition.

There was something different in the design of this conference. Almost a third of those attending were on-the-ground grassroots practitioners from countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Antigua, Vanuatu, Mongolia, Colombia and the Philippines. People in whose name discussions would take place, people in whose name discussions on development issues often take place without their participation.

Blog by Mary Faherty, Programme Manager, MRFCJ: On a cold, wet March afternoon in Dublin, I had the privilege of meeting Rachael Raykumari from India and Gertrude Kenyangi from Uganda, both of whom were in Dublin attending Trocaire’s 40th birthday conference. It was an informal meeting over a cup of tea and after trading comments on the Irish weather, we moved on to discussing climate and its impact on people in their countries...

Mongolia, with 2.87 million people living on 1.5 million hectares, is the world’s most sparsely populated country. With 15 animals for every person, 70 percent of the adult population work in animal husbandry. But extreme weather, in both summer and winter, present high risks to nutrition and food security. Across Mongolia, average temperatures have increased by about 1.6°C during the past 60 years. Herder households often have a poor diversity in their diets, meaning micronutrient deficiencies are common.
