Mrs Robinson will give the closing session’s keynote speech, while preceding this Mary Faherty, Programme Manager with the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, will co-facilitate with the World Resources Institute a session entitled ‘Human rights, equity, and the legal aspects of climate change adaptation’. Rainy seasons are unpredictable and bring sustained heavy rain, causing severe flooding in the cities’ streets. To exacerbate the crisis, many of the poor communities live in overcrowded conditions - often three or four families stay together in one house. But, with many unable to access land for farming, women are themselves becoming more vulnerable to malnutrition. 85 percent of the country’s rural households rely on agriculture for food and income. But without land, women struggle to provide food for their children, meaning that 10-15% of Maradi’s children suffer from acute malnutrition. With 15 animals for every person, 70 percent of the adult population work in animal husbandry. But extreme weather, in both summer and winter, present high risks to nutrition and food security. Across Mongolia, average temperatures have increased by about 1.6°C during the past 60 years. Herder households often have a poor diversity in their diets, meaning micronutrient deficiencies are common.
