Mary Robinson, Foundation President, delivered the Inaugural Concern Worldwide Hunger Lecture in Belfast on Monday 8 October 2012.

In her address Mrs Robinson spoke of the need to be innovative, bold and revolutionary in our responses to hunger and under-nutrition and their underlying causes. She said:

“For me this means embracing a climate justice approach, putting people (and especially women) front and centre, safeguarding their rights and responding to their needs in an integrated and respectful manner. We also need more urgency and more empathy. A child dying of hunger in the 21st century accuses each of us of a failure in our humanity.”

Mrs Robinson highlighted the opportunities presented by Ireland’s Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2013 and the UK’s Presidency of the G8 in 2013 to mobilise all sectors of society to drive a more ambitious agenda to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition.

Following the lecture Mrs Robinson took part in a panel discussion with Tom Arnold, CEO Concern Worldwide, Klaus von Grebmer, Senior Research Fellow and Strategic Advisor, International Food Policy Research Institute, Conall McDevitt MLA and Burton Twisa, Concern Worldwide Associate Country Director (Programmes), Tanzania.
